Seed Cycling Energy Bites

Seed cycling is an alternative therapy that is believed to regulate female hormones. Although evidence is limited in this field, the holistic practice has been around for a long time. Trying Seed cycling will not cause any harm, and consuming seeds regularly may have additional benefits.

Seeds  can be used to influence & balance hormone levels by correcting or eliminating irregular or heavy periods, PMS, menopause and infertility, but may also support those individuals with healthy cycles. The great thing about seed cycling is that is beneficial for women during any stage of life.  Focusing on certain seeds during the first half of your cycle may help to increase oestrogen, and then using other seeds during the second half may help increase progesterone.

This references a 28 day cycle, but please note that you may have a longer or shorter cycle so simply adapt the cycle to fit your cycle.

Follicular phase - Days 1-14 - During this phase oestrogen is increasing, and an egg is maturing ready for ovulation. The nutrients found in flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds may help create and support healthy oestrogen levels. Flaxseeds contain Lignans which are a type of phytoestrogen that can bind to oestrogen receptors and mediate weak oestrogen functions in the body.  Flaxseeds also provide fibre essential for oestrogen metabolism. Pumpkin seeds are high in poly-unsaturated fat and Zinc which are essential for hormone balance.

There are many ways that you can include the seeds into your diet such as adding into smoothies, sprinkling on yogurt or porridge, whip up to make seed butter or tahini, but my personal favourite was is to blend them into no bake cookie balls. ( See recipe below)

Include two of these flaxseed & pumpkin bites everyday through days 1-14.

Flaxseed & Pumpkin Bites
3/4 cup pumpkin Seeds
1/4 cup flaxseeds
1 tbsp chia Seeds
1/4 cup desiccated coconut
2 tbsp @nutcessity walnut butter
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp. Honey

Pulse the pumpkin seeds and Flaxseeds together. Meanwhile melt the coconut oil, honey and walnut butter together in a saucepan until all combined. Put the remaining dry ingredients into the food processor along with the pumpkin seeds and flaxseeds. Pulse a few times before pouring in the coconut oil mix. Blend until the mixture starts to clump together. The ingredients should stick together when pressed between your fingers.
Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture into 16 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball shape. Place the balls in air airtight container and leave in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Luteal Phase - Day 15-30 (Full moon to new moon) During this phase the now empty follicle turns into the corpus luteum that begins to release progesterone to build the uterine lining and support a heathy pregnancy. The endometrium ( uterine lining) is what you shred during your period. Progesterone is the hormone responsible for keeping you feeling chilled, calm and relaxed along with reducing PMS symptoms such as bloating, mood swings and anxiety.
Sesame seeds, like flaxseeds, contain lignans which support the hormones needed through the Luteal phase, whilst sunflower seeds contain selenium, supporting liver and hormone regulation and Vitamin E that can help boost progesterone levels.
Enjoy two of these Sesame & sunflower bites every day throughout your luteal phase.

Sesame & Sunflower Seed Bites

Lemon Juice

Pulse the sunflower and sesame seeds together in a food processor. Meanwhile melt the coconut oil, honey and tahini together in a saucepan until all combined. Add the remaining ingredients and melted coconut oil mix into the food processor with the seeds. Blend until the mixture starts to clump together. The ingredients should stick together when pressed between your fingers.
Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture into 16 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball shape. Place the balls in air airtight container and leave in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Please note, this should not replace any medication without the support of a practitioner.
